Things to consider when remodeling a kitchen

When planning for a kitchen or bath remodel, Chet Baker of Ezine Articles says homeowners should consider the following:

1. Plan ahead. Make product selections early, to avoid delays after the kitchen remodel has been started.

2. Get good help. Hire a remodeling contractor who has experience with kitchen and bath remodeling, and who also has good customer references.

3. Visit the contractor's website. A good remodeling contractor has a website, and it's well maintained and organized.

4. Insist on a contract. And it should include as many details as possible so you know what the contractor is providing for you. (Not all remodeling contractors provide the same quality. Some take shortcuts that you may not see, but will be a problem later.)

5. Communicate with your remodeler. Let them know what you have in mind and work together to reach that end. (A good contractor will keep you informed of the job progress and time frames.)

6. Skip the kitchen desk. Avoid a planning desk in your kitchen, unless you will really use it. They aren't the most efficient use of space.

7. Connect spaces by opening walls and hallways creating more livable spaces. (This is a great tip.)

8. Maximize storage by utilizing wasted spaces efficiently and effectively.

The kitchen has become the "family room" where friends and family members gather and socialize. And with the current economy, more and more consumers are "warming up" to the idea of "cocooning"
